Crowd favourite Kyrgios drops out: 'I'm exhausted'

First-round matches at the Australian Open are in full swing. Defending champion Rafael Nadal managed to qualify for the next round with some difficulty. In his hunt for a new grand slam title, the Spaniard can cross the name of one competitor off the list. Nick Kyrgios had to withdraw with an injury, which is the next setback for the tournament organizers.

After world number one Carlos Alcaraz dropped out, the Melbourne crowd has suffered another setback. Crowd favourite Nick Kyrgios has had to cancel with a knee injury. At a press conference in Melbourne, Kyrgios himself got behind the microphone to explain. 'I'm exhausted, it's coming down hard. This was supposed to be one of the most important tournaments of my career. It certainly hasn't been easy to have to make this decision,' said the deeply disappointed Australian, who will have to undergo surgery on his meniscus. It is not clear how long Kyrgios will be out of action.
