Dizzying numbers show greatness of Federer's career

Roger Federer is putting an end to his impressive career. The 41-year-old Swiss announced via social media on Thursday, Sept. 15, 2022, that the Laver Cup will be his last event as a professional tennis player.

'As many of you know, the last three years have been very challenging, with injuries and surgeries. I have worked extremely hard to get back to full fitness. Unfortunately, I know the qualities and limitations of my body, which has been sending a clear message lately. I am 41 years old and have played more than 1,500 matches in 24 years. Tennis has given me more than I could have ever dreamed of, and now I have to pick the right time to quit professional tennis', the beginning of the message shared by Federer on Twitter reads.

'The Laver Cup in London will be my last ATP event,' the tennis legend continues. 'I will most definitely still play tennis, just not on the tour or the Grand Slams. This is a difficult decision because I will miss everything the tour has given me. But at the same time, there is so much to celebrate. I consider myself one of the most lucky people on this Earth. I was given an amazing talent to play tennis and have done so at a level I never imagined, and for longer than I ever thought possible'

Federer further thanks his wife Mirka, his children, parents and sister in his message. His former coaches, current team, Swiss Tennis Federation, sponsors, rivals and his fans also receive a thank you from the Swiss. As the very last, he thanks the sport itself: 'Finally, to the game of tennis: I love you and will never leave you.'

Federer turned pro in 1998 and had many successes in his long career. He won his first Grand Slam title on the legendary grass of Wimbledon in 2003. In total, he won 103 titles, including no fewer than 20 Grand Slams. In recent years Federer suffered a lot of injuries, which has now made him decide to quit.
