The Formula One season is nearing its end, with only six Grand Prix to go. After sixteen of the twenty-two races, this is a good time to look back at how the season went within a team. Who is the MVP of each team? Who beat his teammate most often? What conclusions can we draw about both drivers?
This time we analyse the Mercedes team. Where for years the team seemed untouchable, this season is suddenly very different. Lewis Hamilton already has seven world titles under his belt, but currently finds himself in a disappointing sixth place. His teammate George Russell is doing slightly better in his debut year for Mercedes with fourth place, but this might just become the first season since 2013 in which no Mercedes driver ends up in the top three.
Russell has 203 points so far and is well ahead of Hamilton, who has only 168, by 35 points. But how many times did he actually trump his teammate?

Despite being well behind his teammate in points and position, Hamilton manages to beat his compatriot quite often. In qualifying, both have beat each other eight times, while Russell shows Hamilton every corner of the track in the races. Though the last statistic is slowly changing. Russell beat Hamilton in seven of the first eight races, but the latter then rebounded. In the last eight races, Hamilton actually beat his teammate five times. Should he do so again in Singapore, you will get 1.72 times your stake. However, Russell beat his teammate during the last three races. If he finishes ahead of the veteran for the fourth time in a row, you will get 2.00 times your bet.
Another thing to note is how bizarrely good both Mercedes drivers are in the race compared to qualifying. Russell managed to finish higher in 75% of the races after the finish flag fell compared to the place he started. Three times he finished lower than his starting position and once in the same position. Hamilton is doing even better in that respect. Like Russell, he finished higher than his starting position in 75% of the races, but he has not finished lower than the place he started at in a single race. Only in the Belgian Grand Prix did the seven-time world champion end up lower than his place at the start of the race, but in that he crashed out.
