Mega jump in world rankings for Coric after sensational win masters Cincinnati

Not Daniil Medvedev, Carlos Alcaraz or Rafael Nadal, but Borna Coric has emerged as the winner of the Masters tournament in Cincinnati. The Croatian sensation experienced the best week of his tennis career in America, which not only earned him a hefty sum of money, but also a big jump in the world rankings. In a week's time, the US Open will begin. Should we also see Coric as a contender for the win in New York?

With his 152nd place in the world rankings, no one looked at Coric prior to the Cincinnati Masters tournament as a possible contender for the final victory. The Croatian was twelfth on the ATP ranking in his heyday, but has fallen a lot due to injury. The 29-year-old Coric did not exactly have a lucky draw. After winning the first round against Italian side Lorenzo Musetti, a clash with Rafael Nadal was scheduled for the second round. To everyone's surprise, Coric won the duel with the Spaniard in three grueling sets. But even at that point, the chances of the final victory were considered very slim.

After beating Nadal, Coric put in a number of impressive performances. Roberto Bautista-Agut, Felix Auger-Aliassime and Cameron Norrie were all swept aside in two sets and so the Croatian surprisingly found himself in the final where Stefanos Tsitsipas was his opponent. The Greek had a good week including a victory over Daniil Medvedev. But Coric also put in a very strong performance in the final and left Tsitsipas without a chance, with a 7-6, 6-2 final score. Coric now finds himself back in 29th place of the world rankings. A jump of no fewer than 123 places! The betting shops have put the Croat in thirteenth place on the list of contenders for the final victory at the US Open with an odd of 34.00.
