Only the Netherlands, Brazil and Argentina impress | Who are the favourites for the World Cup?

After all the international matches this past week, as well as the games earlier this summer, we have managed to get a good idea of which teams are ready for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Quite a few title contenders ended up disappointing and all of them came from Europe. However, the big South American nations were swinging and are therefore the big favourites for the final victory. We have listed the top 10 contenders for the world title for you, including the odds.

Brazil, Argentina and the Netherlands are the three countries with the most consistent performances in recent months. The Brazilians had a perfect run during qualification for the World Cup. They played four friendly matches and won them all. The opponents were not top level, but South Korea, Japan, Ghana and Tunisia were defeated with a total goal difference of 14-2. Brazil particularly impressed up front with the duo of Neymar and Richarlison. On the flanks, they have Antony, Raphina and Vinicius Junior at their disposal , among others.

Argentina's undefeated streak is even more impressive. Their last defeat dates back to July 3, 2019 when they lost to Brazil in the semifinals of the Copa America. The Argentines' game swings a little less than their Brazilian rivals', but defensively they are rock solid. In the past four friendly matches, they have kept a clean sheet each time. Star player Lionel Messi scored nine of 14 Argentine goals. The little dribbler wants to perfrom one more time with his nation at the World Cup in Qatar.

European countries disappoint, Netherlands big exception

Of the title contenders for the World Cup in Qatar, European countries disappointed considerably in their Nations League matches. France narrowly avoided relegation in a group with Croatia, Austria and Denmark. England were even relegated from League A by losing twice to Hungary, among others, and Germany also had to acknowledge its superiority to the Hungarians and finished third in the group.

Spain could not convince either, but did take the group win in the Nations League by beating Portugal 0-1 in a head to head match. Disappointing again, however, was the draw against the Czech Republic and the defeat at home against Switzerland. The only country that performed consistently and showed an upward trend is the Netherlands. They won their Nations League group convincingly, winning five out of six games and drawing the other. The team of coach Louis van Gaal is a big outsider for winning the world title.
