Reigning champion Medvedev starts preparation for US Open, Russian top favourite for final victory in Mexico

On Monday, August 29, the last grandslam tournament of this year, the US Open, begins. In New York, Daniil Medvedev will look to defend his title. To prepare himself as well as possible, the Russian started his first preparation tournament this week. And that was about time because it has been over a month since Medvedev played his last match. We are very curious to see how he is doing. He will be the favourite to win the ATP Los Cabos.

On June 23, 2022, Medvedev made his last appearance at an official tournament. On the grass surface he so dislikes, he suffered a hopeless 3-6 2-6 defeat to Spaniard Roberto Bautista-Agut on Mallorca. Then. when Wimbledon came around, Medvedev had to take a period of rest. He, like all other Russian tennis players, was not welcome in London and so Medvedev spent the entire month of July on training before beginning his preparation for the US Open in the first week of August.

The Russian will want to work towards his top form in the coming four weeks and with that goal in mind he will start off in Mexico. There Medvedev will participate in the ATP tournament of Los Cabos. He is the first seed there and obviously a top favourite for the final victory. In the round of 16(Medvedev had a bye in round one) he will face Australian Rinky Hijikata (ATP-224).
