These six tennis players to keep an eye on at the Australian Open

On January 16, the Australian Open begins. What is the form of the tennis players for the first Grand Slam of the year? Down below we have listed which tennis players may surprise at the approaching tournament in Melbourne. By the way, among the bookmakers Novak Djokovic is the big favourite for the final victory with an odd of 2.0.

1. Taylor Fritz

Taylor Fritz is the man in form in tennis right now. The American already impressed at the ATP Finals with his fabulous backhand and fantastic serve. Fritz reached the semifinals and positioned himself at number nine in the ATP rankings. In 2023, he is simply continuing his amazing form. Just last weekend, Matteo Berrettini was swept aside in two sets and Fritz won the United Cup with the United States. Fritz has yet to win a Slam. In fact, he is yet to really perform at a major tournament, but that should happen this time.

2. Holger Rune

The Dane has developed significantly at the end of 2022 and even won the Masters tournament in Paris by beating Novak Djokovic. Meanwhile, he owns the 10th spot in the ATP rankings. His start in 2023 was disappointing, though. Rune lost disappointingly in Adelaide in the first round to Yoshihito Nishioka 6-2 4-6 4-6. Possibly he was not yet sufficiently settled in for the new season. We do expect him to reach a quarterfinal at the Australian Open, provided he gets a good draw.

3. Sebastian Korda

In addition to Fritz, Sebastian Korda is in blood form. The great talent reached the final of the tournament in Adelaide last weekend and made things very difficult for Novak Djokovic. The Serb eventually won 4-6 in the third set, after Korda even got one match point in the second set to end Djokovic's win streak of 33 wins in a row in Australia. Korda is currently 31st in the ATP rankings.

4. Felix Auger-Aliassime

Felix Auger-Aliassime had a very strong second half of the season. He won two ATP tournaments in a row and was undefeated for more than ten matches. The Canadian, who is now trained by Tony Nadal, had a series of more than ten wins in a row and finished seventh in the ATP rankings. Unfortunately, like Rune in early 2023, he too lost in the first round of the ATP of Adelaide to Alexei Popyrin in two sets.

5. Nyck Kyrgios

Playing on home soil, Nick Kyrgios seems to have finally become a serious player in men's singles since last year. With an ATP ranking of 21, he ranks relatively high for his efforts. His great talent had long been known, but mostly his mentality let him down. Not so at Wimbledon in 2022, he made his first Grand Slam final losing to Djokovic and also played a fantastic doubles year with his mate Thanasi Kokkinakis. They surprisingly won the 2022 Australian Open in pairs.

6. Cameron Norrie

Finally, Cameron Norrie has been playing very well for a while. The Brit has climbed up in the ATP rankings to number twelve, which is not surprising. He performed very consistently in 2022 and wins a lot of matches. He has not beaten the big names yet and has not performed at the really big tournaments, but he too is facing a breakthrough. Can Norrie also show it in Melbourne? We wouldn't be surprised.
