Formula E founder: 'Red Bull slow down their cars to avoid winning by 20 seconds'

| by Jozef Baartman

Formula E and Extreme E founder Alejandro Agag does not think Red Bull Racing's dominance is good for Formula 1, he told GiveMeSport. The Spaniard compares it to his own competitions, where the cars are similar and the drivers and setups make the difference.

'Racing is about winning and if you never win, it becomes boring,' Agag believes. 'Then you might leave the sport, so creating championships where everyone has the opportunity to win is very important.' That is what is currently lacking in Formula One, the Spanish businessman believes. There Red Bull have won all of the five first races, thus far.

'What happens in Formula 1, for example, where Red Bull slow down their cars to avoid winning by 20 seconds, is not good for the sport,' Agag continued. 'You need competition and what happens here (in Formula E and Extreme E, ed.) is that you have new teams at the top, but also last year's strongest teams that are competitive. That's great for the sport.'

Big difference in unpredictability F1 and Formula E

In Formula One, Mercedes, Red Bull and also Ferrari have been calling the shots since last decade. Since 2010, only the former two teams have managed to win titles, while Ferrari often competed in the title race. In Formula E, which has been a championship since 2014, there have been seven different champions in eight seasons alone. Only former Red Bull junior Jean-Éric Vergne won the title twice, while current AlphaTauri driver Nyck de Vries was the class' first world champion in 2021.
