Weghorst receives bad news from Manchester United but can stay in Premier League

| by Niels Opdam

Manchester United will not continue with Wout Weghorst, as reported by Fabrizio Romano. In principle, the Dutchman will return to Burnley, which convincingly won the Championship. If the upcoming promoted club wants to sell Weghorst, the tall striker has plenty of options. Some Spanish teams are reportedly interested in his services, as well as Everton, which narrowly retained their position in the Premier League.

Weghorst was brought in by Erik ten Hag during the winter transfer window as a cost-effective addition to the attacking lineup. Initially, he received praise for his work ethic, but it quickly turned into negativity, primarily due to his lack of goals. The Dutchman failed to score a single goal in 17 league matches. Romano now confirms that Manchester United will not proceed with the thirty-year-old striker.

However, there is no shortage of interest in him. The transfer guru reports that Everton and some undisclosed Spanish clubs are interested in Weghorst. Interested clubs will have to come up with the money for his transfer fee, as he is contracted until 2025. Transfermarkt.nl estimates his value at €14 million. This valuation may be influenced by his time at Besiktas. In the first half of the year, Weghorst played on loan for the third-placed team in the Süper Lig, where he scored eight goals and provided four assists in sixteen matches.
