In the match against Tottenham, manager Erik ten Hag wanted to bring the Portoguese superstar on for the final minutes of the game. Ronaldo, however, refused to come on and instead opted to head off and leave the stadium early.

Ronaldo received strong criticism from various media after this. Former goalkeeper Man United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel condemned Ronaldo's behaviour on BBC Radio. 'Normally I defend Ronaldo. But this is the first time I am disappointed in him. He knows he is making headlines in the news with this behavior.' Analyst Gary Lineker had similar words for Ronaldo's action. 'This is unacceptable! All the attention is now being diverted from United's fantastic performance,' said the former England national team striker.
