US Open semi-finals | Cracker between Tiafoe and Alcaraz, over a million dollars for the finalist

US Open semi-finals | Cracker between Tiafoe and Alcaraz, over a million dollars for the finalist

This year's US Open semi-finals feature some surprising names. No Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer or Daniil Medvedev. Also no Stefanos Tsitsipas or Alexander Zverev. Either way, it will be a surprise winner of the 2022 edition. Friday evening and night it will be known who will play the final. Our prediction? Casper Ruud vs Carlos Alcaraz. And that would be a straight fight for first place in the world rankings.

The first semi-final is scheduled for 21:00 Dutch time. It is between Casper Ruud and Karen Khachanov. Ruud has an excellent week in New York and makes a serious attack on the first position of the world rankings. The young Norwegian has everything in own hand and knows that with a final victory he can crown himself the best tennis player in the world. On his way to the semi-finals Ruud lost three sets. In the third round he faltered against the American Tommy Paul, but after a tough five-setter of four and a half hours the Norwegian stepped off the court victorious.

Friday night's opponent is Karen Khachanov. The 26-year-old Russian is no stranger to the tour, but is on few fans' lists of favourite players. Khachanov struggled towards the semi-finals. In each match he lost a set, but with character he dragged out the victories, the best of which was against Nick Kyrgios in the quarterfinals. Ruud and Khachanov met only once before. That was in 2020 at the gravel tournament in Rome. There Ruud won in three sets. The odds for this match Ruud to the favourite with an odd of 1.53 vs 2.50 for Khachanov.

Cracker between Tiafoe and Alcaraz

Carlos Alcaraz will still be recovering from the insane match in the quarterfinals against Jannik Sinner. After a grueling five-hour battle, the Spaniard walked off the court victorious and that means his two dreams in New York can still come true. Winning a first grandslam title and becoming the world number one. If Alcaraz reaches the final and Ruud loses to Khachanov then the still only 19-year-old Alcaraz can crown himself the world's best tennis player.

But to beat Frances Tiafoe, you have to have a very good day. This tournament's revelation is a real favourite amongst the home crowd. What will also help is the American's fitness. His quarterfinal was completed in 2 hours and 39 minutes, Alcaraz by comparison had to put in over twice as much labour. In any case, Tiafoe has been on the court less compared to his Spanish opponent, at 14 hours and 38 minutes to 16 hours and 9 minutes. The betting shops see Alcaraz as the favourite with an odd of 1.53 vs 2.50.

Fun fact: The player who qualifies for the final awaits a reward of 1.3 million dollars! The winner of the US Open may credit double to his bank account.
