FC Barcelona will announce immediately after the Champions League final that they will acquire Ilkay Gündogan from Manchester City, Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo expects. The German midfielder will sign a two-year contract. Barcelona will not have to put a transfer fee on the table, as Gündogan's contract expires at the end of the year.
Manchester City bought Gündogan for 27 million from Borussia Dortmund in 2016 and the controller has become one of the best midfielders in the world at The Citizens. Among other things, he won five national titles and could even win the Champions League this Saturday. His coach Pep Guardiola recently spoke highly of his captain, who despite that wants to leave. Despite financial problems, Barcelona is said to be doing everything possible to get him and is confident the deal will work out.
Indeed, Mundo Deportivo says his arrival will be announced right after the Champions League final. On Saturday, Manchester City will take on Internazionale. Gündogan can thus say goodbye in style, as City also won the national title and the FA Cup this year. The Champions League would be the icing on the cake. In Catalonia, the finishing touches are being added. Although Gündogan will sign for two years, Barcelona reportedly has an option for a third year. How much the 66-time German international will earn is not yet clear.
Gündogan has already played a total of 303 games for Manchester City, in which he has been involved in 100 goals; 60 goals and 40 assists. He scores especially when City needs it, as he was twice treacherous in the FA Cup final against Manchester United (2-1 win). He also scored a goal in the away match against RB Leipzig (1-1).
