The departure of Sergio Busquets may be a financial blessing for FC Barcelona, but he leaves a gaping hole on the pitch. The Spanish midfielder has been a starter at the club since 2008, so replacing him is going to be a difficult task. However, several Spanish media already know who the successor should be: Martín Zubimendi, 24, who has a €60 million buyout clause in his contract at Real Sociedad.
Zubimendi has played for Sociedad for his entire career and now stands at 138 games for the club. He has a contract valid until 2027 and is worth 40 million euros, according to transfermarkt.co.uk. He reportedly has a 60 million buyout clause and Barcelona are expected to have to trigger it. Real Sociedad are firmly in fourth place, which means the team can look forward to Champions League millions. As a result, there is no need to sell Zubimendi for less than the clause.
The one-time Spanish international has previously expressed that he is a big fan of Busquets, whom he can now replace. Should Barça not succeed in bringing in Zubimendi due to financial problems, Guido Rodríguez (Real Betis) and Sofyan Amrabat (Fiorentina) are also on the list. They are cheaper options because of their shorter contract lengths. Both men still have one-year contracts and are worth 28 million and 25 million respectively. Amrabat (26) impressed at the 2022 World Cup with Morocco, while Rodriguez (29) became world champion with his country Argentina. However, he only featured in the second match of the group stage, playing 57 minutes against Mexico.
