FC Barcelona has almost certainly secured a new player, as reported by Fabrizio Romano on Twitter. The transfer expert states that Mikayil Faye will move to the Spanish top club for five million euros. This is remarkable as the center-back currently plays for NK Kustosija Zagreb, which competes in the second league of Croatian soccer. This season, the club even came close to being relegated to the third league.
Faye is a 1.86-meter tall center-back. He joined NK Kustosija Zagreb in February, coming from Diambars FC in Senegal, and has played ten caps for Senegal's U-17. He played fourteen matches for the Croatian club, which secured their place in the second league through the playoffs. Faye provided an assist in the playoff match and scored one goal in the league. According to Fabrizio Romano, Barcelona has outperformed Borussia Dortmund and Chelsea, securing Faye's transfer to the Spanish champions for five million euros, excluding bonuses. They see the 18-year-old as a potential world-class defender.
In 2018, 2020 and 2022, Barcelona also signed young defenders from Senegal. Moussa Wagué, Moussa Ndiaye and Alpha Diounkou all made their way to Catalonia. Wagué is currently without a club after multiple loan spells, and Barcelona paid five million euros for his transfer. Even at HNK Gorica, he failed to make enough of an impression. Ndiaye is now playing for Anderlecht, and Diounkou spent this year on loan with Barcelona's second team.
