Big Premier League betting scandal: Toney gambled that his own team would lose

Shocking details have come out about Ivan Toney's gambling behavior. The Brentford striker was recently suspended for allegedly gambling on Premier League matches. Now it turns out it is worse than just that: Toney has been classified as a gambling addict and it turns out he even bet on his own matches, the English Football Association report.

Toney was told this month that he would be suspended until January 2024 because he had gambled several times on matches. He allegedly violated English Football Association rules 232 times. Of those bets, Toney allegedly gambled on his match 16 times and 11 times he participated himself. 13 of those 16 times he gambled that his own team at the time, Newcastle United, would lose.

The striker has been diagnosed as a gambling addict and for this he must be treated. This is beneficial to his sentence. It means he would have had no control over his own gambling behaviour and because of that addiction, he got a reduced sentence. He is not allowed to train until September 2023 and he is not allowed to play any games until January 2024.

The gambling scandal took place while Toney was still employed by Newcastle United. He left the club in 2018. Currently, he plays for Brentford. This season, the Englishman scored 20 goals, leaving him behind only Harry Kane and Erling Braut Haaland on the top scorer list. He made his debut as an international in March.
