HSV prematurely celebrate Bundeliga promotion: Competitors score twice in injury time

Bizarre scenes Sunday in Germany's 2. Bundesliga. Hamburger SV seemed to be on their way back to the Bundesliga and were already celebrating lavishly with their fans, but they had not taken into account the ten minutes of injury time in rival Heidenheim's match....

HSV were already celebrating with the travelling supporters after a win over SV Sandhausen, as 1. FC Heidenheim were losing 2-1 to SSV Jahn Regensburg. That score would give HSV one of the two promotion spots in the Second Bundesliga. Well into injury time Heidenheim shocked everyone by scoring twice, causing HSV to miss out on direct promotion after all.

Heidenheim will play in the Bundesliga next season. The club fought themselves a way to an away victory over Jahn Regensburg (2-3). Prince-Osei Owusu scored twice to help Regensburg to a 2-0 lead, before Benedikt Saller helped Heidenheim back into the game, by scoring an own goal (2-1). That was still not enough for Heidenheim for promotion, but in injury time Jan-Niklas Beste (93rd minute) and Tim Kleindienst (99th minute) both scored for the visitors to take them to the Bundesliga for the first time in the club's history.

Heidenheim even ended up becoming champions of the 2. Bundesliga, because of already promoted Darmstadt's 4-0 loss to Greuter Fürth. HSV finished third, but can still be promoted. The club will have to prove themselves the stronger team in a two-game play-off with VfB Stuttgart in the coming week for a spot in the new Bundesliga season. Stuttgart finished 16th in the Bundesliga.
