Medvedev complains after early exit: 'The wind was insane and my mouth was full of gravel'

It was the biggest surprise of the first round at Roland Garros 2023: Daniil Medvedev, the world number two, was defeated 3-2 by qualifier Thiago Seyboth Wild (world number 172). It's no secret that the Russian doesn't enjoy playing on the red surface, but after winning the ATP tournament in Rome last week, his problems on gravel seemed to be over. How does Medvedev himself view his loss?

Medvedev immediately complimented his opponent after the match. "I won't be rewatching it on TV, but my feeling is that he played well. I certainly didn't play badly, but he was good. If he continues like this, he'll be in the top 30 at the end of the year," says the Russian to ATPTour.com. However, he couldn't help expressing his disappointment. "It's always the same story," Medvedev sighed. "I really hope that later in the tournament he plays like he did now, otherwise, it's a shame. Then I'll be thinking, 'Why today of all days? Why not in two days?' "

Seyboth Wild's dominance at the baseline was particularly noticeable, hitting a total of 44 winners. Nevertheless, Medvedev believes he played well. "I was fighting hard and felt fit. I'm disappointed and don't see what I did wrong. The wind was insane, so I don't see how I could have done better. That's fine. It allows me to bounce back faster in the upcoming tournaments."

Besides the wind, Medvedev is definitely not a fan of the gravel. In his eyes, the combination is terrible. "Every time it's over, I'm so happy. Today, due to the strong wind and the dry court, from the third set onwards, I had my mouth full of gravel. I don't know if some people enjoy eating gravel, having it in their bags, in their shoes, in their socks. You can throw those away after every gravel season. Maybe some people like that, but I don't."
