Newcastle United puts out an offer of 80 million euro for failed Barca attacker

Newcastle United could get FC Barcelona out of financial trouble in an instant. According to Mundo Deportivo, the club from England has made an 80 million euro offer for Raphinha. In doing so, The Magpies would break their own transfer record, currently held by Aleksander Isak, who transferred from Real Sociedad last summer for 70 million euro.

Newcastle spent 185 million euro on new players last season, which has proven fruitful for the team. With five games to go, they currently occupy third place in the Premier League, making a ticket to the Champions League almost certain. Indeed, number five Liverpool is nine points behind. Among the players they acquired were Anthony Gordon, Sven Botman and Isak - all young players with lots of potential.

Newcastle wants to continue that policy and sees 26-year-old Raphinha as a suitable addition. Journalist Gerard Romero says Newcastle has even made an informal bid of 80 million euro. Raphinha was snatched away from Leeds by Barcelona last summer for 58 million euro, so the Spanish club stands to make a significant profit. Barcelona is struggling financially and desperately needs the money to comply with LaLiga's regulations.

Under those rules, Barca is not yet allowed to register the transfer-free Iñigo Martínez, acquired from Athletic Bilbao, and the new contract of Gavi, because the salary cap is too high. Barcelona needs to save 200 million euro. So selling Raphinha would certainly be considered as an option, according Mundo Deportivo. This season, the winger has regularly been sat on the bench. So far, Raphinha has played 45 games for Barcelona, scoring ten goals and providing eleven assists.
