Spanish league fires five VARs after showing distorted footage of Vinicius incident

The Spanish Football Federation has intervened harshly following the red card that Real Madrid received in the closing stages of the game with Valencia, by dismissing the five VARs on duty. Vinicius Junior was shown a red card in the 97th minute after referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea was called to the side to review footage of a riot. However, the referee was not shown the full footage.

The flame flared in the closing stages after annoying behaviour by Valencia players. Vinicius Junior, who was racially harassed several times during the game by crowds on the Valencia side, punched in the face of opponent Duro. Duro himself also used physical violence however, but only the footage of Vinicius was shown to the referee, who proceeded to send the Brazilian winger off the pitch, with Duro being allowed to stay.

The Spanish Football Federation RFEF and Real Madrid now judge that the wrong footage was shown and subsequently fired the VAR on duty Iglesias Villanueva and the four assistants. Villanueva was in charge of the other four assistant VARs. Villanueva will still assist the VAR in the match between Getafe and Real Betis, as he had already been appointed
