Thiem on early elimination: "I went from tennis heaven to tennis hell"

Although Dominic Thiem has dropped to number 92 in the world rankings in men's tennis, the Austrian came to Paris with high expectations for the Roland Garros Grand Slam tournament. Unfortunately, he couldn't live up to these expectations, suffering a 2-3 loss against Pedro Cachin. Thiem fought his way back from a 2-0 deficit, but ultimately he fell short.

More than a year ago, Thiem played his first match after a wrist injury, also against Cachin. He lost that match 2-0 in Marbella. He compares the two matches and reflects on his early elimination at Roland Garros. "You can't compare the two. Back then, I wasn't ready to play, I shouldn't even have done it. Today, I was ready to play, ready to fight. And it's clear that's what I did," as stated on ATPTour.com.

"I didn't start the match well at all. I was quite tense. Honestly, I expected a different result; I had very good practice sessions. Unfortunately, it's usually not that easy in the first real match, and that's what happened. I fought my way back brilliantly, played better and better. I just didn't reward myself, didn't give myself the chance to play a second round with less tension," the former number three of the world said.

A journalist referred to Thiem's comment after he lost the 2019 Roland Garros final against Rafael Nadal, where he said he went from tennis heaven to tennis hell. Thiem mentioned that his tumble from the top of the tennis world due to his wrist injury feels the same. "Indeed, I went from tennis heaven to tennis hell, and hopefully now I'll go back to tennis heaven. It's a challenge to return again. I'm pretty sure, with how I've been performing in the past six weeks, that I'm on my way back. Unfortunately, six weeks is not enough to go far in the tournament now."
