What is the prize money in the Champions League season 2022/2023?

If you are the treasurer of a football club, your heart starts beating faster when your club qualifies for the Champions League. Whereas the tournament used to be nicknamed the "millionaires' ball," in 2022 it has changed to the "billionaires' ball." This article explains why.

The prize pool of the Champions League in the 2022/2023 season is filled with an impressive amount of two billion euros. The Europa League and the Conference League have to make do with a sum of 730 million euros combined. The money that the clubs can earn can be divided into four categories:

1. Starting fees. One quarter of the total prize pool is allocated to starting fees. This money is distributed equally among the 32 teams participating in the group stage of the Champions League. This amounts to a sum of 15.6 million euros.

2. Ranking. An impressive amount of 600 million euros is reserved and awarded based on the coefficient ranking. The performances of the past ten years are taken into account. Taking Ajax as an example, they will receive over 21 million euros from this "pot".

3. Performance bonuses. Another 600 million euros is available to distribute as performance bonuses. For example, a victory in the group stage earns a club 2.8 million euros. Advancement to the next round also brings a substantial amount. The breakdown of these bonuses can be found later in this article

4. TV rights / market pool. The remaining 300 million euros are allocated to the pool of TV revenues. This amount is divided among all participating clubs per country. Even clubs that have played in the qualifying rounds receive a portion of this amount.

Performance Amount
Victory group stage €2.8 million
Draw group stage €0.93 million
Reaching the eighth finals €9.6 million
Reaching quarter-finals €10.6 million
Reaching semifinals €12.5 million
Losing finalist €15.5 million
