Xavi Simons could move to top Premier League club for record amount

Xavi Simons is attracting strong interest from Arsenal, as reported by Voetbal International and Eindhovens Dagblad. The playmaker is the key player for PSV, which is demanding at least €50 million for his transfer. This would make Simons the most expensive sale in the history of PSV.

The 20-year-old creative midfielder has been instrumental for PSV this season. Simons finished as the joint top scorer of the Honor Division with 19 goals and 8 assists for his teammates, making him second only to Dusan Tadic in terms of goal contributions. Arsenal is now exploring the possibility of luring Simons away from PSV.

Simons has a clause in his contract that allows him to return to Paris Saint-Germain for €12 million in either 2023 or 2024. PSV is eager to remove that clause but has been unsuccessful thus far. Simons' contract with PSV runs until 2027, giving the club leverage to demand a much higher fee from clubs other than PSG.

Eindhovens Dagblad reports that PSV is considering a minimum of €50 million for Simons. This would surpass the outgoing transfer record set by Hirving Lozano. The Mexican forward moved to Napoli for €45 million in 2019. The high amount is a mere fraction for a top Premier League club. For instance, Chelsea spent around €600 million last year, while Arsenal itself acquired six players for a higher sum than the mentioned fifty million.

Arsenal's interest in Simons appears to be more than a coincidence. Simons recently changed his agent, switching from Rafaela Pimente to Darren Dein. Darren is the son of David Dein, former co-owner and vice-chairman of Arsenal. Additionally, Arsenal is guaranteed to participate in the Champions League, whereas PSV still needs to qualify through the preliminary rounds.
